Worked example: the deadline bonus math

For a 1:1 partner the transfer-bonus formula is points needed = partner price ÷ (1 + bonus). Apply it to the two real, dated bonuses above with clearly hypothetical award prices.

Amex to Avios, 30% bonus, through September 27, 2026. Say a British Airways Avios award you found prices at 50,000 Avios.

points needed = 50,000 ÷ 1.30 = 38,462 → 39,000 Membership Rewards points

Amex transfers move in 1,000-point increments, so round up to 39,000. Without the bonus, the same 50,000-Avios award would cost 50,000 Membership Rewards points at the usual 1:1 ratio — the bonus saves 11,000 points, but only if the 50,000-Avios award is real and bookable.

Citi to Leaders Club, 25% bonus, through September 19, 2026. This partner does not transfer 1:1, so the formula needs the base ratio: points needed = partner price ÷ (base ratio × (1 + bonus)). Per LoyaltyLobby's report of the offer, 1,000 ThankYou points become 250 Leaders Club points with the bonus on the Citi Strata Elite, Strata Premier, Prestige and AT&T Access More cards (175 on select no-annual-fee cards) — a base of 200 per 1,000. Say a hotel redemption you found prices at a hypothetical 40,000 Leaders Club points.

without bonus = 40,000 ÷ 0.20           = 200,000 ThankYou points

The bonus saves 40,000 ThankYou points here — and it also shows why the base ratio matters more than the bonus: at 250 per 1,000, you are paying 4 ThankYou points for every Leaders Club point.

Confirm the exact award or redemption is bookable in the receiving program's own search, not a third-party estimate.
Compare the bonus-adjusted cost to what you already believe those points are worth (the points-to-dollars tools give a cash baseline if you have not set one).
Check whether the receiving program has a pattern of running this bonus repeatedly — programs that transfer-bonus often give you less reason to rush.
Remember transfers are usually one-way: moving points you cannot use before the deadline just to "not miss it" can strand value in a program you have no trip for.

Wait instead of transferring before a deadline if any of these are true:

You do not have an award found and confirmed bookable yet.
The partner program runs this same bonus multiple times a year — missing one is not your last shot.
Your baseline value already beats the bonus-adjusted transfer cost without needing the promotion at all.
You would be transferring "just in case," with no trip planned.
