Amex Points to Dollars Calculator

The American Express points-to-dollars calculator converts a Amex Membership Rewards balance into dollars three ways at once: cashed out, spent on Amex Travel, and transferred to an airline or hotel partner. Cash-out and travel values are the balance times American Express’s published cents-per-point rate; the transfer value is the balance times the published transfer ratio times the value you get per partner mile on a real award. Rates American Express publishes are pre-filled and dated; rates it does not publish are marked as your input.

The formula

cash-out value ($) = points × cash-out rate (¢ per point) ÷ 100
travel value ($) = points × travel rate (¢ per point) ÷ 100
transfer value ($) = points × transfer ratio × partner value (¢ per partner mile) ÷ 100
break-even partner value = best fixed rate ÷ transfer ratio

The transfer ratio is partner miles received per point (1 for 1:1, 0.7 for 1,000 → 700). The partner value comes from an actual award: (cash fare − award taxes and fees) ÷ partner miles × 100 — the same cents-per-point formula as the points vs cash calculator.

Run your numbers

60,000 is a hypothetical example balance.

1 = a 1:1 transfer; 0.7 = 1,000 points → 700 partner miles. JetBlue is listed as 250 points = 200 TrueBlue points, which is the same 0.8 ratio. Some U.S. Membership Rewards products (for example, checking-only members) see fewer partners.

Work it out from a real award: (cash fare − award taxes) ÷ partner miles × 100. 1.40¢ is a hypothetical example, not a valuation.

Worked example (hypothetical numbers)

You hold 60,000 points (a hypothetical balance) and have priced one partner award that returns 1.40¢ per partner mile (a hypothetical award value, not a valuation):

  • Statement credit (cover charges) at the published 0.60¢: 60,000 × 0.60 ÷ 100 = $360.00
  • Amex Travel at the published 1.00¢: 60,000 × 1.00 ÷ 100 = $600.00
  • Transfer, 1:1 partners (e.g. Delta, Aeroplan, Flying Blue, ANA): 60,000 × 1 × 1.40 ÷ 100 = $840.00

The ratio matters as much as the award. At the published ratio of 0.8 for Emirates, Cathay, JetBlue (1,000:800), the same award is worth 60,000 × 0.8 × 1.40 ÷ 100 = $672.00. At that ratio the award must return more than 1.00 ÷ 0.8 = 1.25¢ per partner mile just to beat the 1.00¢ fixed rate above.

The value per partner mile is always your input: it depends on the specific award, date, and cash fare, so no issuer or program publishes it.
